How do I find the best stay at home mom jobs?!
That was something that I thought to myself when I had my daughter and realised that I didn’t want to go back to my boring office job. I wanted to stay at home with my babe!
I didn’t know anyone who worked from home around their kids, and didn’t think that there was anything really out there for people like me.
I was happily proven wrong though. There are lots of legitimate jobs that you can do from home, and I can run through the best of the bunch here. It’s going to be a long list!
There are a lot of companies that will only operate in certain countries, so it’s worth double-checking that they are applicable for where you live.
Ready? Let’s get started:
#1 Online Chat Agent
You know when you are on a website, and have the option to go onto their live chat to speak to them, instead of phoning them up? This is what this is.
(I don’t know about you, but I always choose the option of live chat, as it means I can do it even when I’m busy!).
I’m actually genuinely thinking about adding this to my business after seeing it! There are some requirements that they ask for:
- 65-75wpm typing speed
- The ability to multitask so that you can handle multiple chats
- Grade A problem solving
- Empathy-driven work ethic
- Dependable and flexible
- Team player
The Chat Shop
This company started in 2012, and has now grown to 80 members. They say that they receive a job application every 4 minutes – so there is a lot of competition there!
When applying, they ask you to complete a small questionnaire. The questionnaire is really your chance to shine – as they are looking for ‘the first signs of that magical spark of potential’.
After the questionnaire, you’ll have to complete a typing test. They want fast typists – as the company has an average of a 29 second response time, which you’ll need to prove that you can do.
That isn’t the only part of the recruitment process however – there are 3 more parts:
- Live chat interview
- 2nd interview
- Phone interview
As you can see, it’s a pretty lengthy recruitment process if you are successful on each stage, but that’s how they get their quality agents!
Metaverse Mod Squad
There are customer support rep jobs available here, and also content and engagement moderators, and social media professionals (whatever that means!).
There is an NDA in place, so I’m not sure on exact details, but it looks as though they pay between $8 – $10 per hour.
They have an application form for you to fill in, and then they will send you an NDA form to complete. This doesn’t mean you have the job – this is something that they send to all of their applicants.
If you are lucky enough to get an interview, this will usually be conducted over Skype.
These are home-based call centre jobs – and as well as the option of being a chat remote services technician, there are also remote service technician jobs (which will be more phone based).
As a chat remote services technician, you will be doing tasks such as greeting customers, resolving technical issues and confirming customer agreement to T&C’s.
The usual pay for remote technicians is $10.25 – $11 per hour.
This company offers at-home customer care representative roles. They also offer the same roles for bilingual candidates, and will pay 10% extra for this.
This role consists of handling inbound customer calls regarding claims on their wireless headphone insurance.
The pay is approximately $11-12 an hour (more for bilingual employees), and offers benefits such as 401(k), medical and dental insurance. Nice!
There are lots of different roles available at Capital Typing, but if it’s online chat work that you are looking for, then you’ll want to look at the online customer support roles.
Within this role you would be doing things such as: live customer support, email response management and chat based customer service.
You will be applying as one of their ‘Experts’, and you’ll need to have professional verification for your application, in the form of a diploma, state licence or certification.
You’ll need to chose your particular areas of expertise in the Categories, and then upload your resume. They will get back to you within 10 business days. The pay is 10-50% of whatever the customer pays for the answer.
#2 Customer Service
Do you know what is really important to pretty much every company that’s out there? Customer service.
There are a huge amount of customer service jobs out there, and many companies are now offering home-based positions. Yay!
They generally offer temporary roles, with the potential for it to go long-term. There are part-time and full-time hours available.
They pay per minute, and the pay is usually around $10 per hour. This role is based in the US.
Did you know that Amazon has a bunch of home-based jobs available? They eelquently have customer service and chat support jobs for you to apply for.
They pay by the hour, and the rate tends to be $9 – $10 per hour. There are full-time jobs, and no start-up costs. Bonus!
There are various customer service roles here, such as: car rentals, billing inquiries and more.
There are start-up costs involved in this role, and the pay is $11 – $16 hourly.
The benefit of working for this company is that although you would be working from home, you would get the same benefits as those who are working in the offices. The types of benefits available are things like bonus and incentives, medical benefits and more.
There are no start-up costs involved, and the pay is hourly. They say that the pay is performance-based, so you may want to clarify the different rates with them.
If you are in South America, Asia or Europe, you must be able to commit to working 20 hours per week. If you are in North America, you must be able to work 20 – 40 hours per week.
They ask for the following:
- Bright, personable and can articulate well verbally and in written form
- Previous customer service experience, computer knowledge and telephone skills are mandatory
- A personal home computer with Microsoft Windows 7 or more current Operating System
- A virus protection program and a firewall
- Hard-wired high-speed internet connection (DSL, Broadband, Cable, etc.)
- Quiet work space with no background noise
- South America, Europe and Asia applicants must be fluent in English (reading and writing ability).
#3 Virtual Assistant
A Virtual Assistant* is someone who will help a business run smoothly. The tasks will vary from company to company, but it could be doing things like:
- Answering emails
- Designing social media images
- Sending out pitches
- Writing emails
There is a huge demand for Virtual Assistants (or VA’s as you may hear them called) in the world of blogging. When you have a blog, you quickly realise that it’s kind of impossible to do all of the tasks that comes with running your own business and website.
I have personally used a VA briefly in the past to help me schedule my pins on Pinterest when I didn’t have a clue what I was doing.
A great place to look for VA work is within Facebook groups and communities in which bloggers hang out, as you can show that you know what you’re talking about in there, and provide value when people ask for help.
Just to let you know upfront that they say the perfect candidate is something who has 5 years experience. So if you’re a newbie – this may not be for you – although I’d say to go for it anyway!
They also ask for the following:
- High emotional intelligence (the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others)
- A broad range of technology experience
- Hungry, humble, and smart and a huge heart for serving.
The average pay as far as I can tell is around $17 per hour with this company.
This is an interesting company – they match entrepreneurs with virtual assistants, so each job will be completely different.
Each job will tell you what you need to provide to apply, but generally you will need to provide a resume, and an explanation on why you would be the person for the job.
If you complete the first step, you will be expected to complete a second assessment. If you pass the second assessment, they will invite you to interview with their onboarding consultant.
I just had a quick scan over the jobs that are on there at the time of writing this, and they are typically $18 – $20 per hour and part-time hours.
This is the UK’s largest virtual assistant company. You would be completing a wide variety of personal assistant and administration tasks, such as diary management or document editing, for a number of different people.
They ask for the following:
- At least 2/3 years relevant work experience (although I’ve also seen on another section of the website that they ask for 5 years experience, so be worth clarifying this with them!)
- Ability to work during the working week (Monday-Friday)
- Ability to work part time
- Ability to work from home
- Your own computer and Office software suite
They say that the starting rate is £11 per hour, which is negotiable later.
You could also look into becoming a Pinterest Virtual Assistant* specifically – there is a big niche for this for bloggers.
#4 Virtual Receptionist
A Virtual Receptionist is as it sounds – a receptionist role, but a virtual one. The main way that this differs from Virtual Assistant work, is that it will be more phone based.
Make sure that you are comfortable speaking on the phone and are happy to deal with a large volume of calls.
You need to have an Upwork profile to be hired and paid to work at Smith’s, so be sure to get one set up!
The work hours are either part-time or full-time, and they operate Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST.
For part-time positions you must be available 4 hours a day, 5 days a week (the more the better). Shifts are broken into 2- to 5-hour blocks and are scheduled based on the business needs of Smith.ai and its clients, as well as your availability.
They ask that you have:
- Great work ethic and professional demeanor
- Prior receptionist or call answering experience
- Ability to follow instructions and clearly summarize details
- Ability to multitask and work well under pressure
- Great communication skills and positive attitude
The pay is $10 at entry level ($11 for bilingual agents) and is sent over weekly. Periodic raises are given based on performance and longevity with the company.
This role involves a lot of being on the phone and looking at a screen, so be sure that you are ok with this before applying.
They ask for the following:
- Live in the US
- Fast, reliable computer with high-speed internet connection
- Quiet work environment
- Able to quickly learn how to use multiple types of software, email and live chat computer programmes
The pay is $10 per hour.
If you are in the UK, I found that the website Simply Hired has some great Virtual Receptionist roles posted on there.
I am a blogger, and I absolutely love it. With that being said, it’s a lot of hard work. I’m not going to lie to you and say that it’s easy!
Reasons why I love blogging include:
- I love writing. I’ve always thought of myself as a writer, and I love being able to write what I want, whenever I want.
- Being able to write about my passion. When it comes to setting up a blog, I do really advise that you write about something that you are happy to talk about day after day, or it will be a lot of hard work. I love working on my blog all day, because I love the subject matter.
- I get to help people. This is the number one thing that keeps be going (cause it’s a lot of hard work!).
- I can make money from it passively. When I say passively, I don’t mean I just do something and then leave it to generate me lots of income. I mean I can do something and it can continue to make me money even when I am not physically active on the blog at the time e.g. sleeping, out and about etc.
There are various ways that you can make money from blogging, which are primarily:
- Affiliate marketing e.g. when you refer someone to a product or company, and that brand compensates you for pointing them in their direction
- Sponsored posts (where a brand pays you to write about them specifically)
- Products e.g. I sell my budget planner
- Services e.g. coaching, public speaking
There are other ways to make money blogging, but these are some of the main ones that I see.
Blogging is very much a long-term money making idea. You aren’t likely to make a ton of money from the start, as it will be down to building your audience and good marketing (I wish someone had told me how important the marketing side is!).

Do you have an eye for detail? Then proofreading could be a great job for you!
If you are a proofreader, you will be checking over a piece of work to make sure that there are no obvious grammatical errors that need adjusting.
It’s not the same as a copywriter, who would go in and potentially have to re-write things to make them better – you’d just be checking the words all worked properly.
Edit Fast is a platform which connects proofreaders with clients. To apply, you will need to complete these steps:

Payments are made through Paypal, and EditFast gets 40% of the final total project price whether the project comes directly from a client or from the EditFast admin.
The requirements for this role are:
- A degree from a recognised university
- A wide variety of reading interests
- A computer with an Internet connection
- The usual word processing software
- Past editing/proofreading experience
- Computer/Internet savvy
There are editing agencies that you could join as well, who match writers with proofreaders. Some examples include:
There are other sites that you could look for jobs on, such as Upwork or Problogger.
#7 Data Entry
Data entry is pretty much as it sounds – you will be entering data. This could be in different forms but will typically be moving a piece of information from one place to another, usually electronically.
This company is a company that outsources data entry and transcription.
This is U.S. only, and they ask that you are proficient with computers and can work on multiple projects to strict deadlines.
This is a call centre company in America which offers remote jobs.
You will need to check their Agent Application to see if they are recruiting.
There’s one currently on there for Outbound Sales Coordinators with a fee of $100 per sale (!!!).
There are virtual/work from home phone jobs available at this company, such as:
- Outbound telesales agents
- Inbound telesales agents
- Inbound customer representative
You can sign up to complete tasks with this company, tasks are things like: data research, data entry, language, testing, and more.
The rates are set per task and they pay once per month.
This is a site that will pay you to complete microtasks, such as:
- Creation of texts
- Data categorization
- Copy editing
- Web research
- Mystery Photographers
- App Testing
- Audio & Video Jobs
There is weekly or monthly payment via SEPA or PayPal.
They say that they are always looking for new transcriptionists, editors and translators.
Here you can earn money through graphic designs. You choose the industries, styles and design categories you want to work in.
Rates and rewards vary depending on the type of design work. You’ll be paid in three business days (or less once you become a Top Level designer).
They have on their site: “Listen to a recorded phone call, answer a simple question with the click of a button, and earn real money.”
When you first start, you are given access to the two easiest categories of calls. As you advance, you will unlock new categories which will provide more opportunities to earn.
They will pay you weekly.
Amazon Mechanical Turk
This is micro-task work, as there are still things that humans can do better than computers (or you can bet Amazon would be all over that!).
Examples of the tasks that you can do include:
- Image/Video Processing
- Data Verification and Clean-up
- Information Gathering
- Data Processing
#8 Freelance Writer
I am a freelance writer, and I absolutely LOVE it. Ever since I was little, I’ve wanted to be a writer, so to be paid to write is a dream come true for me.
The way that I got started was to reach out to other bloggers in my niche. I already had my own blog (this one that you’re reading now!), and had networked a bit too. This meant that when I reached out to those other bloggers, they knew who I was already. Luckily for me, they said yes and hired me.

This is an amazing blog full of knowledge on how to be a successful blogger. They have a jobs board which is incredibly popular, and full of great job opportunities – check it out now and you will see what I mean!
You’ve probably heard of Indeed before if you’ve ever done job searches, but did you know that they can be great for freelancing work too? You can search for things such as ‘freelancing’, ‘copywriting’, ‘remote work’ and more.
There are blogging jobs available on here, copywriting jobs, editing and more.
Upwork is a very popular website for freelancers seeking work, because there is a large amount of work available on there, and the fees can be decent when compared to other sites.
If you want to take this seriously, there is a great course that you can take.*
Do you fancy getting paid to type? This is what being a transcriptionist entails, although you will be most likely transcribing audio files – so you need to be a very fast, accurate typist.
To be a good transcriber, you will need to be a fast, accurate typist.
When you are applying for jobs a lot of companies will want you to complete a typing test, where they will be able to test you and see how fast you are able to work – and how many mistakes you make.
You will also need access to a laptop/computer etc and the internet if you want to work from home.
Some other things that you will need to buy:
I have a huge list that I’ve complied the top transcription companies out there, so I suggest that you check that out. For now though, take a look at these:
Accuro is a UK based transcription service who specialise in medical, legal and professional services sectors.
This is a company that hires US and Canadian freelance transcription workers, as well as stenographers/voice writers.
Birch Creek Communications
They have openings in their transcription department for high-quality corporate transcriptionists, transcribing audio files for our corporate clients. They don’t do any medical or legal transcription – but they recommend that if you are a legal transcriber, please visit kendallcreekcommunications.com as they do only legal.
For corporate and financial, the pay is by the audio minute, ranging from .40/audio min to 1.75/audio min.
#10 Internet Researchers/Evaluators
This is one of the more popular work from home sites that I see a lot of people doing, along with Leapforce and Lionbridge below.
The average pay is $14 an hour, and is open to applicants internationally.
You would be working for this company as an independent contractor, and the role requires you to evaluate search results to see if they are accurate.
The average pay with this company is $12 an hour.
As mentioned, this is a really popular one within the money making community, as it’s pretty flexible and has decent pay.
The role is a search engine evaluator one, and they hire in a variety of different languages. The pay is on average $14 an hour.
This is very similar to Leapforce above, with the main differences being that the average pay is $13.50 per hour. You can work up to 20 hours per week.
#11 Online English Teacher
If you are, or have been, a teacher, then this could be a great working from home opportunity for you.
This is something that I wish that I could do, but I don’t have the relevant experience.
This is one of the more popular ones that I see a lot of people I know over the pond doing! You will be teaching English as a second language online via video. I have seen other bloggers doing this in the early hours before the rest of the family is up.
You must have a Bachelors degree in order to apply for this. You can teach from anywhere in the world – but you must be from either the US or Canada.
The pay for this role is $14 – $22 per hour.
These roles are typically on a contract basis e.g. 6 – 12 months.
They require the following for you to apply:
- TESL/TEFL Certificate
- TEFL certification required
- Speak English at an idiomatic level (neutral accent)
- Hold a BA degree or above (desirable)
- Teaching certification is preferred (such as TESOL/TEFL/CELTA etc.)
- Stable and strong internet connection
- Teaching experience is preferred
The pay ranges between $15 – $25. You have a base salary for the first 2 months, when you won’t have a lot of classes.
This one is a little bit different from the other companies, because you will be teaching groups of children, instead of it being a 1-on-1.
They will provide you with lesson plans, and the lessons are 40 minutes long. The pay is up to $21 per lesson.
Magic Ears handles all of the curriculum, scheduling, and parent communication. Must have a bachelor’s degree or current college enrollments to apply.
As a tutor, you can earn $18 – $26 per hour working at home or from anywhere if you have a good internet connection.
#12 Flip Items
One of the best pieces of advice that anyone will give you when it comes to making money, is to flip stuff.
Head to your local charity shops/thrift stores, car boot sales/yard sales, clearance sections in shops – and see if you can find something cheap, that you could sell on for more.
I know a lot of people who do this with huge success. There is a whole ‘reselling’ community – and there are people who make more than a full-time income from it.
I love looking at what fellow bloggers Flea Market Flippers* have bought and sold on – and they even have a course to help you do the same!
When you ask people what they would love to outsource if they won the lottery (or at any point, but mainly when they win the lottery as money isn’t an object!) – there are a few main things that they will say. Things like – cleaning, laundry and cooking.
There are some business ideas for you right there! When it comes to setting up a business, you need to be solving someones problem. Find their problem + provide the solution = income for you.
You could set up a laundry service from home if you have a decent washing machine and iron.
#14 Cake Making Business
Ok, I have a confession to make here. This is a dream of mine! I mean, I do have a list as long as my arm full of the things that I want to do, but I would really love to do this. For me though, I’d want to sell cupcakes and not big cakes.
There are so many cake businesses out there that are run by stay at home mums who have a talent for cake making and decorating. That means that there is a market for them!
Make sure that you have all of the correct insurance, register with the local authority and get advertising! A great place to start would be on Facebook, and asking your friends to spread the word.
#15 In-home Childcare/Childminder
If you are in the UK and reading this, have you thought about becoming a childminder? If you have kids of your own, this is a good way of being able to stay at home with them and make some money at the same time.
You will only be able to look after 6 children up to the age of 8 years, so bear that in mind. If you’d like to find out more information, I found this really helpful site full of info.
#16 Sell on Etsy
In line with using your skills, there are so many ways that you can make money on Etsy, that there is pretty much something for everyone!
Setting up an Etsy store is really easy, you need to fill in all of the information, pricing etc and then you’re good to go.
If you are handy, this could be a great place to sell your stuff.

Helen sells mainly handmade personalised items such as spice jar labels and bottles.
Emma sells all kinds of gorgeous printables such as baby shower printable packs, wine bottle labels, day planners and more.
Elizabeth sells photo prints on here, they’re gorgeous!

#17 Dog Boarding
Did you know that I’ve been a dog boarder for a few years now? I know, I’m so lucky! Getting paid for puppy cuddles is the best thing ever.
When I was paying off my debt, I knew that I would have to try new things that I’d never done before. At the time, my daughter kept asking me if we could have a dog – I said no, because I couldn’t cope with the extra cost.
Then it hit me – I could look after other peoples dogs, and get paid for it! It would be like having a dog of our own, but with none of the expenses, and I could have a break whenever I wanted it.
I started off charging really low fees so that I could get some clients. This worked, and I gradually increased my prices. I only looked after one dog at a time, but if you looked after multiple dogs then you can maximise your earnings.

A bookkeeper isn’t the same thing as an accountant. An accountant will do your taxes each year, and will be able to figure out how much you owe in tax, and file your tax returns.
A bookkeeper will deal with more of the day-to-day finances that come with running a business, such as:
- Updating the financial records
- Creating financial reports
- Collecting payments on invoices
It will vary from business to business, but generally the role of a bookkeeper is to keep track of all of the money coming in and out of the business.
If you want to become a bookkeeper, there aren’t typically a lot of job advertisements for them, but you can keep an eye on sites such as Indeed or Peopleperhour. If you have experience, you could apply to places like Accounting Department or Belay.
The best thing to do would be to be proactive and reach out to small businesses to see if they are in need of your services. You don’t need a degree or previous experience to become a bookkeeper.
#19 Travel Agent
This is something that really intrigues me personally, as I think it would be so much fun to help people find their dream holidays.
I know of a few people who have started up their own travel agent business from home, but there are also lots of companies that you can work for, from home as well.

Are you the person who’s always behind the camera, snapping away? I know a few people who have found a love for photography, and started their own business from it.
Wedding photography is very common and well paid, but you could also do things such as newborn photography or branding photoshoots (I’m looking for a branding photographer at the moment, and I’m looking for a reasonably priced, local one).
To start your own photography business up you will need to:
- Set up a website and Facebook page
- Buy a decent camera
- Learn how to use Photoshop for editing
#21 Drop Shipping
Have you heard about drop shipping before? Don’t worry if you haven’t, I still don’t know a lot about it myself either! This infographic will hopefully help you see what it’s all about:
Essentially, you will be selling a product, but you won’t hold the physical product. When a customer buys from you, the order will go to your supplier, who will then send the product on to your customer.
